How to Test Drive a Used Cruiser

Cruisers have a rather unique riding style, unlike any other model on the market. However, this can make test riding a cruiser model a bit tricky, especially if you’ve never ridden one before. However, you don’t want to skip out on your test drive and risk taking home a lemon. Instead, be sure to check out our helpful used cruiser test driving tips below before visiting your dealership for a test ride.

Model Size

Before you make an appointment to test drive a used cruiser, we recommend taking a moment to sit on the model and ensure it’s a good size and fit for you. Cruisers tend to be rather large and hefty models, making them difficult for beginners and smaller riders to successfully control. To ensure this model is right for you, sit back in the seat to check that you can easily reach and turn the handlebars, adjust the mirrors, and support the bike when you stand up.

Start the Engine

Once you’re sure your used cruiser is a good size fit, you’ll want to set up an appointment for a test drive. When you do, be sure to request a cold start. Starting the engine yourself will allow you to see if the model has any issues turning over or if it makes any suspicious noises while it runs. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for dark smoke releasing from the exhaust as this could be a sign of greater mechanical issues.

Test Drive

When test-driving your used cruiser, be sure to switch gears regularly, and to ride at a low speed in high gear for a short period of time. If you notice any difficulty switching gears, delayed accelerations, or clunking sounds, it may be a sign this model has issues with its transmission. While you drive don’t forget to also accelerate regularly, and watch out for any grinding, squealing, or shaking when you brake, as this often indicates your brake pads or rotors are in bad shape.
